Additional Certification Testing Time for Non-Native English Speakers

Additional Certification Testing Time for Non-Native English Speakers

Ashrae - Additional testing time for ASHRAE certification exams has been added for non-native English speakers, following requests from members and careful investigation and consideration by the Certification Committee.

ASHRAE is adding 30 minutes of testing time to all six certification exams, on request by applicants who self-attest that they are a non-native English speaker. This opportunity begins April 1.

In addition, beginning April 1 through Dec. 31, non-native, English-speaking exam candidates who have not passed one or more of the six certification exams may reapply and retest one additional time per each exam type not passed at no charge.

The most recent suggestion to extend testing time came from the Colombia Chapter via a motion made at the Region XII fall Chapters Regional Conference.  The request was approved following careful investigation and consideration by the Certification Committee to ensure compliance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 17024:2012.  ASHRAE’s High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP) certification received accreditation in 2015 from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the 17024 standard.

“I’m grateful to all those who contributed to the recent addition of 30-minutes additional testing time for self-attested non-native English

“I’m grateful to all those who contributed to the recent addition of 30-minutes additional testing time for self-attested non-native English speakers,” Shanta Tucker, Certification Committee chair, said. “As committee chair, I was pleased to receive the request from our members and then for the enthusiasm on behalf of the Publishing/Education Council in approving this meaningful change. The process of making a significant change to the standardized certification programs is a wonderful example of ASHRAE’s commitment to members and supporters worldwide”

Ross Montgomery, a former vice president on the Board of Directors who has been heavily involved in the Society’s certification process, agreed.

“This extension of certification testing time for non-native English speakers is a good compromise after many years of consideration toward fairness and further illustrates ASHRAE commitment to its strategic plan objectives,” he said.

"I think this is a great oppotunity for all who are Non Native English Speakers and must be seized, especially in a globalized world. All ASHRAE members should have at least one certification," said Gerardo Alfonso, Electronic Communications Committee member and Colombia Chapter member.
